Chanel College student leaders share 2026 vision
The 2026 Year 12 Student Leaders at Chanel College have embraced their roles as leaders of the College community. Together they have a unified vision that is centred on the Marist value of Family Spirit: One Body, One Spirit, One Family.
Following a collaborative process that began in late 2025, the leadership group has defined its legacy through the lens of service. The team is dedicated to uniting the College community by embodying spirit and pride - a philosophy known locally as ‘The Chanel Way’.
The 2026 leadership group represents the diverse talents of the entire cohort. Prefect groups have taken on specific responsibilities across Mission, Culture, Academics, Sport, Environment, and First Nations cultures, while House Captains focus on developing family spirit within House and Pastoral Care Group programmes.
College Vice-Captain, Edwin, noted that student leadership roles are primarily about advocacy and connection.
“As student leaders we are given the honour to have a say and represent the student body of our College, trying to solidify a bridge between staff and students where concerns can be heard, ideas gathered and a warm environment can be maintained,” Edwin said.
This sentiment was echoed by College Captain, Anna, who highlighted the importance of collaborative decision-making.
“The importance of this is that decisions are not made for students, but rather with students, helping to create a College shaped by the community,” Anna said.
The leaders are guided by a challenge often posed by College Principal, Dr Susan Bunkum: to consider how the College is a better place because of their presence. This is reflected in the team’s approach to pastoral care, social justice activities, and buddy programmes.
College Captain, Callum, explained that ‘The Chanel Way’ is more than just a slogan. “When we speak about the Chanel Way, it is not just a fun catchphrase, it is a reminder of the culture we are a part of - the culture we are proud of!” Callum said.
As they begin their final year, the leaders recognise the privilege of their positions, viewing them as an opportunity for servant leadership rather than a pursuit of power or prestige.
Vice-Captain, Sophie, summarised the group’s ultimate goal for their legacy, “While students may not remember what we say or do, they will remember how we made them feel. That is the Chanel Way!”
