St Joseph's School Mackay Outdoor Learnscape Opens - 4/8/2008 The official opening of an outdoor Learnscape was one of the highlights of Catholic Education Week celebrations at St Joseph’s Primary School in North Mackay.
Federal Member for Dawson, James Bidgood, opened the new area in a ceremony witnessed by the whole school community which included a special Catholic Education Week liturgical celebration.
 Assistant Director Schools: Northern Region, Craig Fairbairn and Federal Member for Dawson, James Bidgood, inspect the Weather Station, part of the new Learnscape at St Joseph's North Mackay | St Joseph’s Principal Nick Hurley said the area was designed as an outdoor classroom and had the capacity to encompass all key learning areas of the curriculum.
“We set up a design committee to research ideas and come up with a plan that would provide a variety of contexts for our students to become actively engaged in learning activities,” Mr Hurley said.

The Learnscape includes a sundial, weather station, worm farm, vegetable garden, compost bin, reflection area, a mathematics and games area, a colonial water pump, physical activity station and a literacy activity area titled “The Write Way”.
St Joseph’s also staged their annual musical as part of Catholic Education Week celebrations entitled Magical Mystery Mayhem at Mackay’s Entertainment Centre.
The production is an original work put together by staff and students under the direction of teacher Brian Grundy and past teacher Barry Waddington.
